New to Nova Scotia ReSilience Support Grant

The Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia is known for providing a voice to those who so often struggle in silence. For supporting mental health initiatives from one end of our province to the other. For genuinely caring about the one in four of us who live with mental illness and addiction. Now, it is proud to also be leading the way for refugees who are new to our communities and experiencing trauma.

Thanks to an anonymous Foundation donor, the New to Nova Scotia Resilience Support Grant is providing professional group trauma therapy to Ukrainian refugees and other newcomers to our province.

“I feel now there are people behind me who can support me. I am hopeful. I feel like I’m not alone.”

“There’s no doubt this free and accessible trauma stabilization program is saving lives and creating a resilient circle of support in our province,” says Foundation President & CEO, Starr Cunningham. “By working with our partners at the Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia (ISANS) we are facilitating hope and healing for individuals and families who are managing acute symptoms associated with PTSD and associated triggers.”

The New to Nova Scotia Resilience Support Grant allows a psychological expert in Trauma Therapy to provide sessions on the “Building Resilience After Adversity – A Trauma Stabilization Group for Newcomers” program over a 10-week period. The sessions involve a mixture of skills teaching, practice opportunities, and psychoeducation to assist participants with managing their experiences and symptoms. The group is the first stage of treatment for PTSD.

With a current waiting list, the need is great.

Please consider donating to help those who have lost so much as they begin to rebuild their homes and lives in our inclusive and welcoming province.
