FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Fashionable volunteers raise funds for upcoming Pictou County mental health grant

Dartmouth, NS – March 12, 2015

A “Models for Mental Health” event organized and facilitated by volunteers Lily DeYoung and Shawna Coleman will fund a mental health based grant in Pictou County. DeYoung and Coleman hosted the fundraiser in New Glasgow on November 2, 2014 with proceeds directed to the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia. They plan to make Models for Mental Health an annual event.

Through the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia’s Named Community Grants program, contributing organizations or individuals are able to allocate funding to support mental health programs in specific areas or with specific functions. Lily and Shawna wanted their event’s legacy to be shared with those in their local community.

“We’re so grateful to Lily and Shawna for taking on this exciting initiative. As our Named Grants program grows, we envision other volunteer fundraisers doing the same and look forward to seeing the impact across the province,” said Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia President & CEO, Starr Dobson.

The first round of funding for the Pictou County Community Grant will open for applications in April 2015. Seven thousand dollars was raised at the first event and full or partial funding will be available to one or more individuals, agencies or organizations with mental health mandates, or who work directly with mental health consumers in Pictou County.

The grant will follow the same application process and general criteria as Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia Community Grants. For more information and to join the grants contact list, visit mentalhealthns.ca/grants
