Remembering Jay Smith Benefit Concert raises awareness and notable funds for the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia

What started as a way to remember the talents of Nova Scotia musician Jay Smith has resulted in $9500 being raised to support mental health initiatives across the province. On March 28, 2015, Matt Mays, Carmen Townsend, Adam Baldwin, and special guests, including members of Rock Ranger, came together to celebrate the life and music of Smith.

Jay Smith was lead guitarist for Matt Mays. He struggled with mental illness, and lost his battle in March 2013. Proceeds from the sold out concert were directed to the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia and the Unison Benevolent Fund.

The Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia is a registered charity dedicated to improving the lives of Nova Scotians living with mental illness and their loved ones.  The foundation raises funds for vital programs and services that help make this possible, province-wide.

The Unison Benevolent Fund is a non-profit organization that provides counselling, emergency relief, and benefit programs for those in the Canadian music community who face personal or professional challenges due to hardship, illness, unemployment or economic difficulties.

Funds raised at the show totaled $18,870. They will be distributed equally between the two organizations.

“The Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia is honoured to be the recipient of these funds raised in Jay’s memory. We know music plays a healing role in the recovery process for many Nova Scotians. We see the proof whenever we connect with people who attend the music therapy programs and coffeehouse gatherings we support," says Starr Dobson, Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia President and CEO.

“Thank you to Sonic Concerts, the artists, and all those who attended to celebrate Jay’s life. These funds will go a long way in helping us support Nova Scotians living with mental illness and their loved ones.”
