Foundation invests in mental health throughout Nova Scotia

Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia Invests in the Future of Mental Health through its Provincial Grants Program 

(HALIFAX) The Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia is pleased to announce that it will provide $75,000 in grants to 11 organizations throughout the province to help enhance mental health programs and services.
 
The Provincial Grants Program received 51 applications from mental health organizations throughout Nova Scotia requesting support. A volunteer committee made up of business and community leaders from across Nova Scotia reviewed all of the applications and made recommendations for funding support.
 
“It was a very challenging process,” said Fred MacGillivray, Chair of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees. “There are so many worthwhile and much-needed projects looking for support, we wish we could fund all of them.”
 
The following projects will receive a 2010/11 Provincial Grant:
 
  • Adolescent Mental Health - IWK Adolescent Centre for Treatment (Benefiting region: All of Nova Scotia)
  • Anger Management: A Road to Wellness - Family Service of Eastern Nova Scotia (Benefiting regions: Guysborough, Antigonish)
  • Challenging Stigma Through Media -Sun Life Financial Chair in Adolescent Mental Health (Benefiting regions: HRM)
  • Creating And Reclaiming Empowerment (CARE) - Acadia First Nation (Benefiting regions: Annapolis Valley/South West)
  • Dads Making a Difference - Family Services Association (Benefiting region: HRM).
  • Help When You Need It - South Shore Public Libraries. (Benefiting region: South Shore)
  • Kids Help Phone Talks Mental Health - Kids Help Phone. (Benefiting region: All of Nova Scotia)
  • Leadership Training - Leave Out ViolencE (LOVE) (Benefiting region: HRM)
  • Life Skills Education - Cape Breton Community Housing Association. (Benefiting region: Cape Breton)
  • Taking Action on Cyber Bullying - Nova Scotia Association for Sexual Health (Benefiting regions: Cape Breton, Cumberland, HRM, Pictou Co, South Shore, South West)
  • Youth Speak – Breaking Down Stigma One Classroom at a Time - Laing House (Benefiting regions: HRM, South Shore and South West) 
     

Since 2006, the Foundation has provided more than $650,000 in Provincial Grants ranging from anger management, healthy living initiatives and educational opportunities to anti-stigma and anti-bullying programs. The program also raises awareness of mental health challenges and plays an advocacy role for those living with mental illness.
