Mount Hope Then and Now: A History of The Nova Scotia Hospital
By A.H. MacDonald, $10.00

At a time when changes take place almost daily within our health care system, Mount Hope Then and Now provides an insightful look at the province’s primary psychiatric care facility. From Hugh Bell’s campaign in the 1840s which led to the establishment of the hospital and the evolving community-based care movement of our own day, this is a perspective on one hospital in the context of its specialty – mental health. Making extensive use of primary sources (including an important collection of Hugh Bell’s original letters located by the author in the Dorothea Dix Papers at Harvard University), Mount Hope Then and Now presents an analysis of a hospital in its changing environment over the last century and a half. Herb MacDonald is a training officer at the Nova Scotia Hospital.
